How to Use This Calculator

Enter your system size and country

Start with your solar array size in kWp (kilowatts peak) and select your country. Country selection matters: Fronius has especially strong support in Austria and Australia where it's headquartered, while SMA has a larger US installer network. Both brands are widely available in Germany and the EU.

Toggle warranty extension

Fronius offers a base 10-year warranty extendable to 20 years via the Primo Plus program. SMA offers a base 10-year warranty extendable to 30 years total. The calculator shows the break-even analysis — inverters fail at roughly 12% rate after year 8, so warranty extension typically pays off on systems over 8 kWp.

Set your display and internet preferences

This is the most underrated differentiator. SMA Sunny Boy has a built-in display you can read directly on the inverter — critical for rural sites, off-grid systems, or anyone who doesn't want to rely on an app. Fronius Symo and Primo use LED status lights only: monitoring requires the Fronius Solar.web app and a reliable internet connection via Fronius SuperFlex. At unreliable sites, the calculator flags this as a risk for Fronius.

The Formula

Annual Production = kWp × 4.5 PSH × 365 days × Peak Efficiency Efficiency Delta (kWh/yr) = Fronius Annual − SMA Annual = kWp × 4.5 × 365 × (97.6% − 97.0%) = 0.6% annual advantage 25-yr Avoided Electricity = ∑ (Annual kWh × $0.15/kWh × degradation factor) TCO = Equipment Cost − 25-yr Avoided Electricity Value Warranty Break-even = Extension Cost ÷ (Inverter Replacement Cost × Failure Probability)

The 0.6% peak efficiency delta (97.6% Fronius vs 97.0% SMA) translates to real kWh every year. On a 10 kWp system producing 16,425 kWh/yr, Fronius generates ~99 extra kWh per year — about $15/yr at $0.15/kWh. Over 25 years this compounds to ~$375, which offsets part of the higher-priced models. However, SMA's offline monitoring capability often matters more than this marginal efficiency gain.

Example

Marcus — 8 kWp off-grid cabin, Australia

Marcus is installing solar at his rural Australian property. Internet is unreliable. He wants local monitoring and extended warranty. His array is 8 kWp.

Comparison result

Fronius cost range$960–$1,440
SMA cost range$1,200–$1,760
Fronius annual production12,889 kWh
SMA annual production12,810 kWh
Internet risk flagYes — Fronius loses monitoring without internet
RecommendationSMA Sunny Boy — offline display, reliable rural monitoring

Despite SMA's slightly lower peak efficiency, the built-in display and offline capability make it the clear winner for Marcus's rural setup. He can check system performance any time without an app or internet connection. Fronius SuperFlex would require a stable internet link Marcus doesn't reliably have.

FAQ

Both are premium European brands with excellent track records. Fronius wins on peak efficiency (97.6% vs 97.0%), app-based monitoring quality, and slightly lower entry cost. SMA wins on offline monitoring (built-in display), internet-independent operation, and a longer extended warranty option (30yr vs 20yr). For urban grid-tied systems with reliable internet, Fronius is an excellent choice. For rural, off-grid, or reliability-critical applications, SMA's offline capability tips the scales.
The inverter itself operates without internet — it converts DC to AC regardless. But Fronius Solar.web monitoring requires internet to display real-time data, push alerts, or show historical production. Without internet, you lose all remote monitoring, fault alerts, and production visibility. SMA Sunny Boy has a built-in display that shows live watts, daily kWh, and fault codes locally — no internet needed.
Typically yes for systems over 5 kWp. Inverter failure rates climb to ~12% after year 8. A replacement inverter costs $1,200–$2,500 installed. The Fronius Primo Plus extension (adding 10yr) costs ~$400–600 — well below the replacement cost. The break-even is typically year 8-10. SMA's extension to 30yr is even more attractive given SMA's reputation for longevity, at ~$500–800 extra for dramatically extended coverage.
Both have storage-ready hybrid models. Fronius Symo GEN24 supports battery integration with BYD, LG, and other DC-coupled batteries. SMA Sunny Boy Storage and Sunny Tripower are AC-coupled and DC-coupled options. If battery integration is a priority now or in the future, specify the hybrid variant when purchasing — the standard Symo and Sunny Boy string inverters don't support direct DC battery coupling without additional equipment.
On a 5 kWp system producing 8,200 kWh/yr at SMA efficiency: Fronius generates approximately 49 extra kWh per year (0.6% × 8,200). At $0.15/kWh, that's ~$7/yr. Over 25 years it totals ~$175 — a small but real advantage. For large commercial systems (50+ kWp), the delta becomes significant: ~500 kWh/yr extra, worth ~$75/yr or $1,875 over 25 years. The efficiency advantage matters more at larger scale.
