How to Use This Calculator

Select your JA Solar DeepBlue model

JA Solar's DeepBlue series is their premium N-type TOPCon product line. The DeepBlue 4.0 Pro comes in 580W and 625W configurations for residential and commercial use. The DeepBlue 5.0 Pro 670W adds bifacial dual-glass for commercial ground-mount applications. The DeepBlue 6.0 700W is JA Solar's 2026 next-generation flagship with advanced TOPCon cell architecture. All DeepBlue models use N-type cells with 0.40%/yr or better degradation and 30-year performance warranties.

Choose your application type

Application type changes the cost context shown. Residential installs (5–20 kW) typically see $2.20–2.80/W all-in installed cost. Commercial (100–5,000 kW) achieves lower $/W due to bulk procurement and less complex installation. Utility-scale (5 MW+) panel costs drop to module-only pricing with tracker and BOS costs calculated separately.

Enter system size, peak sun hours, and electricity rate

The calculator computes panel count, annual kWh, 25-year production, savings, and payback. Electricity rate drives all financial outputs — residential buyers should use retail rate; commercial/utility buyers should use avoided cost or PPA rate. JA Solar is the world's #2 panel manufacturer — panels are bankable for commercial project financing.

The Formula

Panels Needed = ⌈System kW × 1000 ÷ Panel Watts⌉ Actual System kW = Panels × Panel Watts ÷ 1000 Year 1 Production = System kW × PSH × 365 × 0.80 × bifacial bonus (1.08 if bifacial) Year N Production = Year 1 × (1 − degradation/100)^N × (1 − 0.02 first-year) 25-yr Total = Sum of Years 1–25 System Cost = System kW × 1000 × $/W (model range ±$0.15) Net Cost = System Cost × (1 − 0.30 ITC) Payback = Net Cost ÷ Annual Savings

The 0.80 derating accounts for inverter losses (~97%), wiring (~2%), mismatch (~2%), soiling (~3%), and shading (~2%). Bifacial panels receive an 8% bonus for conservative rear-side gain at a white-gravel ground-mount installation. Actual bifacial gain ranges from 2–5% (dark soil close to ground) to 15–25% (snow, concrete, elevated trackers).

Example

Carlos — 10 kW DeepBlue 4.0 Pro 580W system, Texas

Carlos is in Austin with 5.2 PSH and pays $0.19/kWh. He wants a reliable N-type panel at below-premium pricing.

25-year production~375,000 kWh
Annual savings~$3,000/yr
Simple payback~5.8 years
Year 25 efficiency~91.4% (N-type TOPCon 0.40%/yr)

The DeepBlue 4.0 Pro's $2.30/W pricing is roughly 35% cheaper than Maxeon IBC while still delivering N-type TOPCon performance with a 30-year warranty. For Carlos, the lower upfront cost results in a 5.8-year payback vs 7+ years for premium IBC — a compelling trade-off when roof space is not the binding constraint.

FAQ

JA Solar is the world's #2 solar panel manufacturer by shipped gigawatts (behind JinkoSolar), having shipped over 70 GW through 2024. They have maintained Bloomberg NEF Tier 1 bankability status every quarter since 2012, are listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and operate manufacturing across China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brazil. Their DeepBlue N-type panels have received top performer status in PVEL's Solar Module Scorecard — independent laboratory testing of long-term durability and degradation. For commercial project financing and PPAs, JA Solar panels are accepted by virtually all major project finance lenders globally.
TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) is an N-type cell architecture where a thin tunnel oxide layer is deposited on the rear of the cell to improve carrier passivation. This reduces recombination losses — electrons are more efficiently captured before they can recombine. The practical result: higher efficiency (22–24% vs 20–22% for PERC), lower temperature coefficient (-0.28 to -0.30%/°C vs -0.35%/°C for PERC), and lower annual degradation (0.35–0.40%/yr vs 0.50–0.55%/yr for PERC). N-type cells also have no Light-Induced Degradation (LID) — the first-year performance cliff that PERC panels experience from boron-oxygen defects. DeepBlue TOPCon panels start strong and maintain output more consistently over their 30-year warranty period.
The DeepBlue 5.0 Pro 670W bifacial dual-glass panel makes sense when: (1) it's a ground-mount system where the rear can see reflected light from grass (albedo 0.20), gravel (0.30–0.40), or snow (0.60–0.80); (2) a carport canopy where rear light comes from pavement or concrete below; or (3) a rooftop with white TPO membrane (albedo ~0.55) allowing meaningful rear gain. For conventional dark asphalt shingle rooftop installs, rear gain drops to 2–5% — rarely worth the extra cost. The dual-glass construction also provides better moisture resistance for humid environments, making it a preferred choice for coastal or tropical installations regardless of bifacial gain.
JA Solar's DeepBlue performance warranty guarantees at least 87.4% of rated output at year 30 — 5 years longer than the industry-standard 25-year warranty. The warranty covers output decline through a linear schedule: no more than 2% in year 1, then 0.40%/yr for years 2–30. If panels produce below this guarantee, JA Solar will replace or compensate. Importantly, the warranty is tied to the manufacturer — it follows the panels regardless of installer, distributor, or property owner changes. Note: product (workmanship) warranty is 12 years for current DeepBlue series. The 30-year term is specifically the performance (output) guarantee.
Both are N-type TOPCon panels from Tier 1 manufacturers and are very similar in technical specs. JinkoSolar Tiger Neo 605W at 22.7% efficiency and JA Solar DeepBlue 4.0 Pro 625W at 23.0% are essentially equivalent real-world performers. Key differentiators: Tiger Neo has a 30-year performance warranty matching JA Solar. JinkoSolar ships more volume (#1 globally) which may affect distributor availability. JA Solar's DeepBlue 5.0 Pro and 6.0 offer higher wattages at competitive pricing. In practice, choose whichever your installer can source at competitive pricing — both are excellent, bankable, and covered by equivalent warranties.
