How to Use This Calculator

Enter your daily usage and backup hours

Start with your daily electricity consumption in kWh (check your utility bill) and how many hours of backup power you need. The calculator converts this to required storage capacity accounting for Pylontech's 80% depth of discharge — the safe operating limit that preserves battery life. 4 backup hours covers overnight essentials; 24 hours covers a full off-grid day.

Set module count and inverter brand

Pylontech batteries are modular — each US3000C module adds 3.55 kWh, each US5000 adds 4.8 kWh, each FORCE-L module adds 7.1 kWh, and each Pelio-L module adds 14.2 kWh. The calculator recommends the best model for your energy requirement and checks whether your inverter brand has native BMS communication support.

Read the inverter compatibility

Pylontech batteries communicate with inverters via CAN bus or RS485 for native battery management. The US5000 has the widest compatibility across Victron, Sol-Ark, Deye, Sungrow, Solis, Growatt, and SMA. The Pelio-L is newer and currently compatible with Victron, Sol-Ark, and Deye. Always verify the exact firmware revision with your installer.

The Formula

Required Energy = Daily Usage (kWh) × (Backup Hours ÷ 24) ÷ 0.80 DoD Modules Needed = ⌈Required Energy ÷ kWh per Module⌉ Total Capacity = Modules × kWh per Module Usable Capacity = Total Capacity × 0.80 (80% DoD) Actual Backup Hours = (Usable kWh ÷ Daily Usage) × 24 Cost Range = Total kWh × $/kWh (model-specific range)

The 80% depth of discharge (DoD) is Pylontech's recommended operating limit. Cycling below 20% state of charge reduces lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cycle life significantly. Pylontech's 6,000-cycle rating at 25°C assumes 80% DoD — equating to approximately 16 years at one full cycle per day. At partial cycling (common in grid-tied systems), actual lifespan can exceed 20 years.

Example

Priya — 25 kWh/day household, 12 hours backup, Victron inverter

Priya's household uses 25 kWh/day and wants to power critical loads (fridge, lights, router, fans) for 12 hours during grid outages. She has a Victron Multiplus II inverter.

Victron compatibleYes — native CAN BMS

Priya's 3-module FORCE-L1 stack gives 16+ hours of backup — more than the 12 she needs, providing comfortable margin for cloudy days or higher-than-normal usage. The Victron Multiplus II communicates directly with Pylontech's BMS to optimize charge/discharge cycles automatically.

FAQ

Yes — Pylontech is one of the world's largest LiFePO4 battery manufacturers, founded in 2009 in Shanghai. They have shipped millions of battery modules globally and are the default battery recommendation for Victron, Sol-Ark, and Deye inverter users. Their US series (US3000C, US5000) has a proven multi-year track record in residential and light commercial installations. Pylontech holds UL, CE, TUV, and IEC certifications. They are not as well-known in the US consumer market as Tesla Powerwall, but they are far more modular and cost-effective at the component level.
Pylontech sells modular battery components — you purchase individual modules (3.55–14.2 kWh each) and combine them with a compatible inverter. Tesla Powerwall is a fully integrated product including inverter, software, and a premium brand experience. Pylontech at $350–500/kWh compares to Powerwall at $800–1,000/kWh installed. The trade-offs are real: Powerwall has a simpler plug-and-play install, better US consumer warranty support, and tighter software integration. Pylontech requires a compatible inverter and a qualified installer familiar with BMS configuration.
Pylontech rates their batteries at 6,000 cycles to 80% capacity retention when cycled at 25°C ambient temperature. At one full cycle per day (common in off-grid or self-consumption systems), this equals approximately 16 years before capacity falls to 80%. In practice, most residential systems cycle partially (0.3–0.7 cycles per day), extending calendar life to 20+ years. High temperatures accelerate degradation — batteries in hot climates (above 35°C average) will have shorter cycle lives. Pylontech recommends keeping batteries between 0°C and 50°C operating range.
No — do not mix models in the same stack. Pylontech requires all modules in a parallel stack to be the same model and ideally the same age. Mixing US3000C and US5000, or mixing new and old modules, causes imbalanced charging and can reduce cycle life or trigger BMS faults. You can run multiple separate stacks of different models connected to the same inverter in some configurations, but this requires careful engineering and firmware support. Always check with your inverter manufacturer before mixing battery generations.
Victron Energy has the most mature and thoroughly tested Pylontech integration — the combination of Victron Multiplus II + Pylontech US5000 is arguably the most popular off-grid/hybrid stack globally among experienced installers. Sol-Ark (US-assembled) provides excellent Pylontech support and is popular in the US for its all-in-one design. Deye and Sungrow offer native Pylontech BMS support with good track records. Solis supports US5000 and FORCE-L2 via CAN. Always use the inverter manufacturer's compatibility list and ensure firmware is up to date before connecting.
