How to Use This Calculator

Enter your monthly bill and region

Enter your average monthly electricity bill in Euro from your Slovak supplier (ZSE — Západoslovenská energetika, VSE — Východoslovenská energetika, or SSE — Stredoslovenská energetika). The calculator uses Slovakia's average retail rate of €0.18/kWh. Select your region — Košice and Nitra (3.6 PSH) are Slovakia's sunniest areas benefiting from more continental eastern and western lowland climates, while Bratislava, Žilina, and Trenčín (3.4 PSH) see slightly lower radiation.

Set system size and grant eligibility

Select your system size in kWp. Systems up to 10kWp on residential properties are eligible for the Zelená domácnostiam (Green for Households) grant of up to €1,500, funded by EU Structural Funds and administered by the Slovak Innovation and Energy Agency (SIEA). Toggle the grant on to see your net cost and improved payback.

Virtual net metering in Slovakia

Slovakia operates a virtual net metering scheme — surplus solar electricity not consumed on-site is credited to your account at the retail rate (approximately €0.18/kWh). This means exported energy effectively earns the same value as self-consumed energy, making solar economics more favourable than traditional feed-in-tariff countries with below-retail export rates.

The Formula

Monthly kWh = Monthly Bill ÷ €0.18/kWh (blended SK retail rate) Annual production = kWp × PSH × 365 × 0.80 efficiency Self-consumption = Annual kWh × 50% Self-consumption savings = Self-consumed kWh × €0.18/kWh retail Virtual net metering credit = Exported kWh × €0.18/kWh retail System cost = kWp × €1,100–1,500/kWp Zelená domácnostiam grant = up to €1,500 for ≤10kWp residential Net cost = System cost − grant Payback = Net cost ÷ Annual benefit (typically 7–9 years)

Slovakia's solar policy is governed by Zákon č. 309/2009 Z.z. (Act on Promoting Renewable Energy). The Zelená domácnostiam programme is administered by SIEA under EU Structural Funds. Virtual net metering credits are managed through OKTE (Operátor trhu s elektrinou). Payback of 7–9 years is typical for residential systems; with the grant, 6–7 years is achievable for optimal system sizes.

Example

Jana — Košice home, 5kWp, with Zelená domácnostiam grant

Jana pays €110/month for electricity in Košice. She installs a 5kWp system and applies for the Zelená domácnostiam grant.

Košice's 3.6 PSH gives strong production for a Slovak city. Virtual net metering at retail rate means exported electricity is as valuable as self-consumed energy — a significant policy advantage. The Zelená domácnostiam grant meaningfully shortens payback to under 6 years in this scenario.

FAQ

Yes — Slovakia's solar conditions are comparable to Austria (3.4–3.6 PSH), and the virtual net metering policy crediting exported electricity at retail rates makes economics favorable. Payback periods of 7–9 years without grants, and 6–7 years with the Zelená domácnostiam grant, are typical. Košice and Nitra enjoy the best solar resources; even Bratislava and Žilina achieve viable payback due to rising electricity prices.
Zelená domácnostiam (Green for Households) is a Slovak grant programme financed by EU Structural Funds and managed by SIEA (Slovenská inovačná a energetická agentúra). It offers vouchers of up to €1,500 for residential photovoltaic installations up to 10kWp. Vouchers are issued in rounds — check siea.sk for current open applications. The grant is applied directly to the installation invoice, reducing your upfront cost.
Slovakia uses a virtual net metering system operated by OKTE (Operátor trhu s elektrinou). Surplus solar electricity you don't self-consume is credited to your account at the retail electricity rate — approximately €0.18/kWh. These credits offset future electricity bills. This is more advantageous than countries offering feed-in tariffs below retail rate, as your exported energy is effectively valued the same as energy you consume directly.
Košice and Nitra (3.6 PSH) are Slovakia's sunniest regions — Košice benefits from its eastern continental position, while Nitra sits in the flat, sun-rich Danubian lowlands. Prešov, Banská Bystrica, Trnava (3.5 PSH) are close behind. Bratislava, Žilina, and Trenčín (3.4 PSH) receive slightly less radiation but still achieve good solar economics. Slovakia's conditions are solid for Central European solar.
For a typical Slovak apartment using ~400 kWh/month, a 3kWp system covers a significant portion of consumption. A family home using ~600–800 kWh/month benefits from 5–8kWp. Systems up to 10kWp are optimal for the Zelená domácnostiam grant. Commercial installations of 20kWp+ are common for businesses. The virtual net metering scheme means even oversizing slightly is not penalized — surplus credits roll over.
