Note that third-party apps typically show the same granularity as the manufacturer platform — they cannot add module-level data to a string inverter that doesn't have it.
String-level monitoring gives you one production number for a series of panels wired together. If one panel underperforms due to a bird dropping, shade, or failure, it reduces the entire string's output but you can't pinpoint which panel. Module-level monitoring (from microinverters or power optimizers) shows the production of each individual panel, making it easy to identify exactly which panel has an issue. For roofs with any shading, soiling concerns, or tight panel warranties, module-level is worth the additional hardware investment.
Most systems require current transformer (CT) clamps installed on your main electrical panel breakers. For Enphase, you need the Envoy-S Metered gateway with CT clamps (~$150-$250 hardware). For SolarEdge, you need an SE Energy Meter (~$100-$150). Fronius and SMA offer Smart Meter add-ons in the $100-$200 range. Cloud-dependent monitoring is a legitimate concern — if a company shuts down its cloud servers, you lose monitoring. Enphase and SolarEdge are publicly traded companies with long track records. For hardware that communicates locally (Fronius, SMA via Modbus/SunSpec), you can always read data locally even if the cloud is gone. Home Assistant and PVOutput can serve as backup monitoring platforms for most inverters. For inverters with local API access, your data is never entirely dependent on a manufacturer's cloud service.
Data refresh rates vary by platform: Enphase Enlighten updates every 5-15 minutes for production data, with 1-minute intervals in Enlighten Manager. SolarEdge monitoring refreshes every 15 minutes in the homeowner portal. Fronius Solar.web can show near real-time data locally but cloud updates are typically every 5 minutes. Tesla updates every minute for Powerwall-connected systems. Local monitoring via Modbus or direct API can achieve 1-10 second refresh rates — far faster than any cloud platform.
