How to Use This Calculator
Enter your storage capacity and module count
Sungrow's SBR/SBH battery system is built on stackable 9.6 kWh modules. Enter your target capacity — 9.6 kWh works for essential backup, 19.2 kWh handles a whole home overnight, and up to 51.2 kWh (8 modules, SBH HV Pro) enables near-off-grid operation. Enter how many modules you plan to stack — this affects floor load and installation cost.
Sungrow hybrid inverter compatibility
If you have or plan to install a Sungrow SH series hybrid inverter (SH5.0RS, SH8.0RS, SH10RS etc.), the SBR battery communicates natively via CAN bus with no additional gateway or BMS adapter required. This saves $600–900 in equipment cost and simplifies commissioning significantly. If you're using a third-party inverter, you'll need to verify BMS communication compatibility.
Cycle count and electricity rate
Enter how many full charge-discharge cycles you expect per year. Daily solar cycling is approximately 300–365 cycles/year. If you primarily use the battery for emergency backup (not daily), 20–50 cycles/year is typical. The electricity rate drives your annual savings calculation — check your utility bill for the per-kWh rate.
The Formula
The 95% round-trip efficiency means for every 1 kWh you put into the battery, you get 0.95 kWh back out. At 6,000 cycles guaranteed to 80% capacity, daily cycling users reach that threshold in approximately 16–20 years. The 30% federal ITC applies to residential battery storage systems charged by solar — confirm with your installer that the battery qualifies under current IRS guidelines.
Example
Michael — 19.2 kWh Sungrow SBR system, Phoenix AZ
Michael has a Sungrow SH8.0RS hybrid inverter and wants whole-home backup. He's in Phoenix paying $0.14/kWh and plans daily solar cycling.
Results
Michael's Sungrow ecosystem saves $800 in gateway hardware because the SBR talks natively to his SH8.0RS inverter. The 10-year warranty is backed by Sungrow's global service network — a meaningful differentiator for long-term reliability vs. less-established LFP brands.
