SunPower Maxeon 7 vs REC Alpha Pure-R — Key Specs

When SunPower Wins

When REC Wins

LCOE Calculation Method

Annual production (kWh) = System kWp × PSH × 365 × 0.80 (efficiency factor)
25yr production = Sum of annual production × (1 − degradation)^year for years 0–24
Net cost = (System kW × $/W × 1000) × (1 − 30% ITC)
LCOE ($/kWh) = Net cost ÷ 25-year production
Payback = Net cost ÷ (Annual kWh × electricity rate)

Warranty Value Deep Dive

SunPower's 40-year warranty is the longest in the industry. It covers:

The 40-year warranty adds roughly 15 years of guaranteed production beyond REC. If panels produce for 40 years at degraded output, the 25-year LCOE calculation understates SunPower's lifetime value.

FAQ

Is SunPower Maxeon 7 worth the premium over REC Alpha?

On small roofs (under 500 sq ft usable space), yes — the efficiency advantage lets you fit more kW in less space. On large roofs with ample room, the premium is harder to justify through production alone. The 40-year warranty is a real differentiator for long-term homeowners and eliminates panel replacement risk that REC's 25-year warranty doesn't cover.

Where is the SunPower Maxeon 7 manufactured?

SunPower Maxeon cells are manufactured in Malaysia and Philippines, then assembled into panels. SunPower's US assembly operations are in Oregon. Note: Maxeon panels do NOT qualify for the additional 10% IRA domestic content ITC bonus because the cell manufacturing is not US-based — unlike QCells Georgia-made panels.

Does REC Alpha qualify for the IRA domestic content bonus?

No. REC Alpha Pure-R panels are manufactured in Singapore. They qualify for the standard 30% federal ITC but not the additional 10% domestic content bonus available to US-made panels. The standard 30% ITC applies equally to both SunPower and REC.

What happened to SunPower as a company?

SunPower filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2024 and split into parts. The Maxeon Solar Technologies brand (which makes Maxeon panels) continues as a separate public company. When purchasing, verify that your warranty is backed by Maxeon Solar Technologies, not the legacy SunPower entity. Dealer relationships and warranty coverage have been maintained through the reorganization.

How does REC Alpha Pure-R compare to earlier REC Alpha models?

The REC Alpha Pure-R uses a pure silicon back sheet instead of the earlier Alpha's glass-back design. This reduces weight and cost. Efficiency improved slightly to 22.3%. The warranty structure remains at 25 years. The Pure-R is REC's flagship residential panel for 2024–2026 production runs.
