How to Use This Calculator
Enter your monthly bill and city
Enter your average monthly electricity bill in Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH). Ukraine's household electricity tariff is ₴4.32/kWh as of 2024. Select your city — Odesa and Kherson (3.8 PSH) are Ukraine's sunniest locations, benefiting from the Black Sea climate. Lviv (3.2 PSH) in western Ukraine receives the least solar radiation due to its more continental European weather patterns. The calculator accounts for each city's daily peak sun hours to estimate your annual solar production accurately.
Choose system size and tariff type
Select your solar system size in kWp. For Ukrainian households dealing with energy security concerns, 5–10kWp with battery storage is increasingly popular. The green tariff toggle is critical: systems installed before August 2024 may have legacy contracts paying a fixed €0.15/kWh (~₴6.23/kWh) for exported surplus — one of Europe's historically generous feed-in tariffs. New systems receive auction-based market prices of approximately ₴3.5/kWh. Always verify your contract type with your installer or energy provider (Oblenergos).
Energy security context
Ukraine's energy infrastructure has experienced significant disruption since 2022. Solar panels combined with lithium battery storage (typically 10–15kWh) provide electricity independence during grid outages. This dramatically increases the effective value of solar — self-consumed power at ₴4.32/kWh saves far more than exporting at auction rates. A solar+battery system is therefore evaluated not just on financial ROI but on energy resilience.
The Formula
Ukraine's solar market has grown rapidly since 2014 and especially post-2022. The legacy green tariff (зелений тариф) of €0.15/kWh was established to attract investment in renewable energy and applied to residential systems under 30kWp. From August 2024, new installations participate in capacity auctions or receive market-based compensation. Ukrainian installers typically price systems at ₴25,000–35,000/kWp all-in, which equates to roughly $650–900/kWp — competitive by European standards. VAT on solar equipment is currently 20% but subject to periodic exemptions.
Example
Olena — Kyiv apartment, 3kWp (no battery)
Olena pays ₴900/month for electricity in her Kyiv apartment. She installs a 3kWp balcony/rooftop system with no battery, on the new auction tariff.
Result
With Kyiv's 3.4 PSH, a 3kWp system produces roughly 2,981 kWh/year. Adding a 15kWh battery (₴50,000 extra) would increase self-consumption to 70%+ and provide critical backup during outages — particularly valuable given Ukraine's infrastructure situation. The battery payback is partially justified by avoided generator fuel costs.
