How to Use This Calculator

Enter your community solar array details

Start with the total array size in kilowatts — your developer should provide this in your subscription agreement. Community solar arrays typically range from 500 kW to 5 MW. Then enter your subscription percentage — this is the share of the array's output allocated to your account. Residential subscribers typically get 0.5–10% of the array.

Enter your utility rate and subscription cost

Find your utility's retail electricity rate on your electric bill ($/kWh). This determines the value of each kilowatt-hour credit you receive. Then enter your monthly subscription cost — what you pay the community solar developer. This number must be lower than your monthly credit for the arrangement to save you money.

Select your state

State rules define how credits are calculated. California uses Virtual NEM (VNEM) where credits are issued at a generation rate (~85% of retail). Massachusetts SMART uses a fixed adder above retail. New York's Value Stack issues credits at full retail for most subscribers. The calculator adjusts your effective credit rate by state.

The Formula

Array Annual kWh = Array kW × 0.185 capacity factor × 8,760 hrs Your Annual kWh = Array Annual kWh × Subscription % Monthly kWh = Annual kWh ÷ 12 Effective Credit Rate = Retail Rate × State Credit Factor (0.85–1.0) Monthly Bill Credit = Monthly kWh × Effective Credit Rate Annual Net Savings = Annual Credit − Annual Subscription Cost 20-Year Savings = Σ (Annual Credit × 1.5% escalator) − Annual Sub Cost

The 18.5% capacity factor reflects ground-mounted community solar arrays that track the sun or are optimized for annual output — slightly better than typical rooftop residential. The 1.5% annual electricity rate escalation mirrors historical utility rate increases. Subscription costs are typically fixed or escalate at below-CPI rates under most community solar contracts.

Example

David — 2% share of a 1,000 kW New York array

David subscribes to 2% of a 1,000 kW community solar array in upstate New York. His utility rate is $0.15/kWh and his monthly subscription fee is $18/month. New York credits at 100% of retail rate.

Array size1,000 kW
Subscription2% = 20 kW capacity
Utility rate$0.15/kWh
Monthly sub cost$18/mo

Result

Annual kWh allocated32,418 kWh/yr
Monthly kWh2,702 kWh/mo
Monthly bill credit$405/mo
Annual net savings$4,644/yr
20-year savings~$107,000

David's 2% share produces significant savings because community solar at 1,000 kW scale is highly productive. The $18/mo subscription vs $405/mo credit makes this an exceptional deal. Most community solar subscriptions are priced at a discount to retail — the savings are typically 5–15% of your electric bill, not as dramatic as owning panels, but with zero upfront cost.

FAQ

Virtual Net Metering (VNEM) is a billing mechanism that allows electricity generated by a remote solar array to be credited against the utility bills of multiple customers who don't live at the generation site. It's "virtual" because the electricity doesn't physically flow to your home — instead, your utility calculates how much energy your subscription share produced and applies an equivalent credit to your bill. This enables renters, apartment dwellers, and homes with poor solar access to benefit from solar energy.
Community solar is the broader program; VNEM is the specific billing mechanism California uses. In most states, community solar works through a bill credit mechanism where your utility applies a credit based on your share's output. The key difference from standard net metering (for home solar) is that VNEM allocates credits across multiple accounts from a single generation source. Most states call their programs "community solar" or "shared solar" rather than VNEM, even though the underlying mechanism is similar.
Community solar savings scale with your electricity consumption. If your annual electric bill is $600, your subscription should be sized to produce credits roughly matching that amount — don't over-subscribe. Most community solar programs limit subscriptions to 100–120% of your annual consumption to prevent gaming. The savings are typically 5–15% off your electric bill, since subscription costs are priced at a slight discount to retail rates. It's most beneficial in high-rate states like CA, NY, MA, and HI.
Most community solar contracts run 20–25 years but allow cancellation with 30–90 days notice, often with no penalty. This is a major advantage over rooftop solar — you're not locked in with a lien on your home. Some developers offer month-to-month subscriptions, though those may have slightly worse economics. Always read the contract terms for cancellation fees, notice periods, and what happens if you move. Many programs allow you to transfer your subscription to your new address if you move within the same utility territory.
As of 2026, over 40 states have some form of community solar or shared renewable program. If your utility doesn't offer it, check with your state's Public Utilities Commission — many programs are utility-specific and may only be available from certain distribution utilities. Municipal utilities and rural cooperatives sometimes lag behind investor-owned utilities in adopting these programs. If your state has no program, contact your state representative — advocacy groups like the Vote Solar Initiative track legislative progress on community solar bills by state.
