How to Use This Calculator

Enter your monthly bill and system size

Enter your average monthly ONEE electricity bill in Moroccan Dirham (MAD) and the system size you want to install in kWp. A typical Moroccan home uses 3-5 kWp; villas and riads 5-10 kWp; commercial properties 10-50 kWp. The calculator uses a blended residential rate of 1.20 MAD/kWh (ONEE 2026 estimate) to project your savings.

Select your city — Ouarzazate is exceptional

City selection determines peak sun hours. Ouarzazate (6.5 PSH) has world-class solar irradiance — the same reason it hosts the Noor Solar Complex, one of the world's largest concentrated solar plants. Agadir (5.8 PSH) and Marrakech (5.5 PSH) are also excellent. Even Tangier (4.5 PSH) and Rabat (4.8 PSH) are competitive with Southern Europe.

Toggle ONEE net metering

Morocco's net metering (autoproduction) regulation allows systems up to 200 kWp to sell excess electricity to ONEE at approximately 90% of retail. Enabling net metering is highly recommended for any system sized to produce more than you consume — it significantly improves ROI by monetizing exported energy rather than wasting it.

The Formula

Annual Production (kWh) = System kWp × PSH × 365 × 0.80 efficiency Panels = System kWp × 1000 ÷ 400W (round up) System Cost (د.م.) = System kWp × 10,000 MAD/kWp average (range: 8,000-12,000) Monthly Savings = Annual Savings ÷ 12 Annual Savings (net metering) = Self-consumed kWh × 1.20 MAD + Exported kWh × 1.08 MAD (90%) Annual Savings (self-consumption) = Self-consumed kWh × 1.20 MAD only Payback = Average System Cost ÷ Annual Savings 25-yr Net Savings = Sum of Annual Savings (0.5%/yr degradation) − System Cost

Morocco has no residential solar tax incentive as of 2026, but the VAT exemption on solar equipment reduces effective system costs. The Noor Energy Program and Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) support commercial-scale solar development. Residential solar remains economically compelling purely on electricity cost savings.

Example

Fatima — 5 kWp rooftop in Casablanca

Fatima pays د.م.400/month for electricity in Casablanca and wants to install a 5 kWp rooftop solar system with ONEE net metering.

System5 kWp rooftop, Casablanca (5.0 PSH)
Panels13 × 400W panels
Annual production~7,300 kWh/an
System costد.م.40,000-60,000

Result

Monthly savingsد.م.400/mois (near full offset)
Annual savings~د.م.4,800/an
Payback period~10.4 years
25-yr net savings~د.م.70,000

With 5 kWp in Casablanca, Fatima produces enough electricity to largely offset her monthly bill. Net metering handles the variability — excess production in summer months earns credits that reduce winter bills. A 10-year payback on a 25-year system yields 15 years of near-free electricity and over د.م.70,000 in net savings.

FAQ

Yes — Morocco has excellent solar resources across the entire country, from 4.5 PSH in Tangier to 6.5 PSH in Ouarzazate. While residential electricity rates (1.20 MAD/kWh average) are lower than in Europe, the abundant sunshine compensates. Payback periods range from 7-10 years in most cities, with 25-year net savings of 2-4× the initial investment. The MASEN national strategy targets 52% renewable energy by 2030, making solar policy favorable.
Morocco's autoproduction law (Loi 13-09) allows solar system owners to connect to the ONEE grid and export excess electricity. Systems up to 200 kWp for low-voltage connection are eligible. Exported electricity is credited at approximately 90% of the retail rate. The process requires an ANRE-licensed installer, bi-directional meter installation, and ONEE approval (typically 30-90 days). Commercial systems above 200 kWp may connect to medium-voltage but require additional authorization.
Ouarzazate receives 6.5 peak sun hours per day — among the highest in the world for a city of its size. This is why it hosts the Noor Solar Complex (Noor I, II, III, and IV), totaling 580 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic capacity. For individual homeowners or businesses in Ouarzazate, a solar system produces 30% more electricity than the same system in Casablanca, dramatically improving economics. The region's clear skies, low humidity, and minimal cloud cover create near-perfect conditions year-round.
A complete rooftop solar system in Morocco costs approximately 8,000-12,000 MAD/kWp installed, including 400W panels, string inverter, mounting hardware, wiring, and installation. A 5 kWp residential system costs 40,000-60,000 MAD. Prices have fallen 40-50% over the past 5 years. Agadir and Marrakech tend to have competitive pricing due to strong installer competition. Always get 3 quotes — pricing varies significantly by installer quality and panel brand.
Morocco exempts solar equipment from VAT (0% TVA on panels and inverters), reducing system costs by approximately 10-20% compared to non-exempt purchases. There are no direct residential tax credits as of 2026, unlike the US 30% ITC. Commercial and industrial solar may access financing through the Green Finance Program at reduced interest rates. The MASEN agency provides support for larger commercial projects. The net metering regulation itself is the primary financial incentive for residential solar.
