How to Use This Calculator
Select inverter type and system size
Solis produces budget-tier string inverters (S6-GR series), hybrid inverters with battery ports (S5/S6-EH series), and commercial string inverters (S5-GC series). Select your inverter type and enter your system kWp. The calculator matches the closest Solis model and shows cost, efficiency, and warranty — all in the budget tier ($0.08–0.15/W).
Choose your battery brand
Solis hybrid models natively support Pylontech, Dyness, and BYD batteries via CAN bus BMS — meaning the inverter and battery communicate automatically to manage charge rates, cell balancing, and state of charge. This eliminates manual configuration and prevents overcharging. If you select a battery brand not on the native list, additional configuration or an RS485 adapter may be required.
Understand the warranty trade-off
Solis's 5-year base warranty is shorter than Sungrow (10yr), Fronius (10yr), or SMA (10yr). The 10-year extension brings Solis into line with competitors but adds cost. For budget-conscious residential installs where DIY replacement is feasible, the 5-year base may be acceptable. For commercial installs or O&M contracts, the 10-year extension is strongly recommended.
The Formula
Solis inverters are designed with a DC/AC ratio of 1.0–1.3, meaning a 5 kW inverter can accept up to 6.5 kWp of panels before clipping begins. Light clipping (5–10%) is economically acceptable and common practice to increase inverter utilization during morning/evening hours. The calculator uses a 1:1 ratio to ensure no clipping — users can slightly oversizes panels for cost optimization.
Example
David — 6 kWp hybrid system, Pylontech US5000, budget install
David wants the most affordable hybrid inverter setup that natively supports his Pylontech US5000 battery. He's installing 6 kWp of panels on a single south-facing roof pitch.
Results
David saves approximately 35–45% on inverter hardware compared to a Sungrow SH5RT equivalent. The Solis S5-EH1P has a proven track record with Pylontech batteries and is widely installed in South Africa, Australia, and the UK. The Solis Cloud app provides Wi-Fi monitoring out of the box.
