How to Use This Calculator

Select inverter type and system size

Solis produces budget-tier string inverters (S6-GR series), hybrid inverters with battery ports (S5/S6-EH series), and commercial string inverters (S5-GC series). Select your inverter type and enter your system kWp. The calculator matches the closest Solis model and shows cost, efficiency, and warranty — all in the budget tier ($0.08–0.15/W).

Choose your battery brand

Solis hybrid models natively support Pylontech, Dyness, and BYD batteries via CAN bus BMS — meaning the inverter and battery communicate automatically to manage charge rates, cell balancing, and state of charge. This eliminates manual configuration and prevents overcharging. If you select a battery brand not on the native list, additional configuration or an RS485 adapter may be required.

Understand the warranty trade-off

Solis's 5-year base warranty is shorter than Sungrow (10yr), Fronius (10yr), or SMA (10yr). The 10-year extension brings Solis into line with competitors but adds cost. For budget-conscious residential installs where DIY replacement is feasible, the 5-year base may be acceptable. For commercial installs or O&M contracts, the 10-year extension is strongly recommended.

The Formula

Model Selection = closest Solis model by application type and kW Units Needed = ⌈System kWp ÷ Model kW⌉ Cost Range = System kWp × 1000 × Solis $/W (model ± $0.01) Warranty = 5yr base or 10yr extended (user selection)

Solis inverters are designed with a DC/AC ratio of 1.0–1.3, meaning a 5 kW inverter can accept up to 6.5 kWp of panels before clipping begins. Light clipping (5–10%) is economically acceptable and common practice to increase inverter utilization during morning/evening hours. The calculator uses a 1:1 ratio to ensure no clipping — users can slightly oversizes panels for cost optimization.

Example

David — 6 kWp hybrid system, Pylontech US5000, budget install

David wants the most affordable hybrid inverter setup that natively supports his Pylontech US5000 battery. He's installing 6 kWp of panels on a single south-facing roof pitch.

FAQ

Solis (Ginlong Technologies) is a publicly listed Chinese solar inverter manufacturer (Shenzhen Stock Exchange: 300763) founded in 2005. They specialize in the budget-to-mid-range residential and small commercial inverter segment. Solis has shipped tens of GW globally and is particularly strong in South Africa, Australia, and parts of Europe where budget installs are common. They hold CE, TUV, G98/G99, and AS/NZS certifications. Independent reliability data is mixed — Solis inverters have had some models with higher failure rates than Sungrow or Fronius, so the 10-year warranty extension is particularly valuable for Solis installs.
Solis's 5-year base warranty reflects their pricing strategy — they compete on cost, not warranty length. The 5-year base is shorter than competitors (Sungrow: 10yr, Fronius: 10yr, SMA: 10yr) but Solis offsets this with a low purchase price. The 10-year extended warranty upgrade brings Solis in line with competitors and is available for an additional fee. For residential installs, the risk of a 5-year warranty is manageable if the installer provides good service coverage. For commercial installs with long-term O&M contracts, the 10-year extension is essential.
Yes — the Solis S5-EH1P and S6-EH3P hybrid inverters support Pylontech US5000 via CAN bus BMS natively. This means the inverter reads the battery's state of charge, temperature, and cell voltage directly from Pylontech's BMS and adjusts charge/discharge rates automatically. No adapter or manual programming is required. Note: Pylontech US3000C compatibility varies by firmware version — confirm the exact revision with your installer. The FORCE-L series requires additional verification with Solis compatibility documentation.
Solis peak efficiencies range from 97.5–98.6% depending on model. Sungrow peaks at 97.5–98.6% across the same range. In practice, the efficiency difference is negligible — 0.5% lower efficiency on a 10 kW system produces approximately 40–50 fewer kWh per year. At $0.20/kWh, that is $8–10/year. The cost difference between Solis and Sungrow on a 10 kW system is typically $200–500, meaning Solis pays back the efficiency penalty in 20–60 years — easily justified as a budget choice. Efficiency should not be the primary decision factor when inverter prices differ significantly.
